The photo of the Florida Studio below, located in Brevard County, Baxter shared with sculptress Barbara Osmundsen.
Is it difficult art-wise sharing studio space?
Baxter: Sometimes yes, it is difficult and hard not to make comments of the other's workings. Learning to be quiet until asked, has been difficult at times. However, the artistic stimulation I receive far exceeds those difficult times.
For seven years, back in the seventies, I shared a studio with sculptor and painter, Kee Briggs, both in Mexico and in Colorado. There, too, the stimulation was far beyond my expected response.
Then and now art-wise the rewards have at times been overwhelming, particularly at down times. We learn to be quiet, then learn to speak as one with two libraries of experience and knowledge and intuition from which to draw - all while keeping the work well within the frame of each individual artist rejecting the more lazy temptation of sameness.
For this kind of arrangement to work well, the two must be able to get along with each other prior to sharing any studio. Respect is imperative; individualism and purpose fervently guarded.
